- Cooking spray
- ½ cup (1 stick) butter, softened
- ⅓ cup white sugar
- ⅓ cup dark brown sugar
- 2 cups unsweetened applesauce
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup white whole-wheat flour
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
- 1½ teaspoons baking soda
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- 2 teaspoons apple pie spice
Directions
- Heat oven to 350 F.
- Spray a 9-by-9-inch baking pan with cooking spray.
- Use a hand mixer or large spoon to combine softened butter, white sugar, and brown sugar in a large bowl. Mix until smooth and creamy.
- Add applesauce and eggs. Mix until well combined.
- In a separate bowl, stir together the two types of flour, coca powder, baking soda, salt, and apple pie spice.
- Slowly add flour mixture to the butter mixture. Mix on low until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Pour batter into the prepped pan. Spread batter out evenly.
- Bake for 30-40 minutes. The cake is done when a toothpick poked into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool before serving.
