  • ½ cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup apple cider or red wine vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon dry mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper, or hot sauce
  • ¼ cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1 ½ pounds chicken, skinless (2 split breasts, 4 drumsticks)


  • Combine all ingredients, except chicken, in a saucepan.
  • Bring contents of saucepan to a boil, then reduce to low and simmer for 15 minutes, until sauce is thickened and flavors are developed.
  • On a large plate or platter, brush chicken with half of the sauce. Cover and marinate in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
  • Transfer chicken to a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil, place in oven and broil for 10 minutes on each side. Reduce oven to 350 F.
  • Remove chicken from oven and brush with remaining sauce. Cover with aluminum foil and continue baking for 30 minutes or until juices run clear.
